More than a hundred years and a family trace the history of one of the most traditional businesses in contemporary Malaga, Óptica Fernández Baca. Located in the heart of the historic center, specifically at number 12 of the Plaza de la Constitución, it is now Rafael Prado -fourth generation- who leads this reality that began with his great-grandfather back in 1913. Currently, Óptica Fernández Baca has created its own A universe where distinctive glasses with personality are the centerpiece of the establishment, from leading brands such as Céline, Dior or Ermenegildo Zegna to the most daring such as Etnia Barcelona or Modo.
Origins of Óptica Fernández Baca
At the beginning of 1900, Juan Fernández and Ángel Herrero joined forces to start the Fernández y Herrero optician's, at number 21 Calle Granada. As usual at that time, watches, binoculars and photographic items were not lacking on the counter. He was Juan's eldest son, the result of his first marriage to Trinidad Baca -an outstanding disciple of the painter Nogales- who replaced his father as head of the business after his death. From a very young age, Ildefonso also became the head of the family.
Years later, Ildefonso marries Concha Casares to form the perfect tandem. Concha opens the Dukar optician on Salinas street, also a jewelry store, leading the business until 1979. They have seven children, to whom they transmit their values of excellence and effort. The eldest of them, Juan, began helping his father Ildefonso from a young age and opened the establishment on Calle Mármoles as one of the founding partners of Federópticos.
In the 1990s, one of Ildefonso's sons, Álvaro Fernández Baca, and his mother, took over the business until their retirement years later. Rafael Prado Fernández Baca, the current owner, takes over, accompanied by Manuel Ávila, who has worked in optics for more than four decades. Óptica Fernández Baca acquires its own name in the Malaga business scene after years of trade, commitment and good work.
Nowadays
Prado has brought innovation and a new aesthetic vision to the evolution of optics, visual health being the axis of the business and without ever forgetting its family origins. The celebration of several editions of the Glassy Show eyewear catwalk, the creation of her own eyewear firm, Dukar -in homage to her grandmother's opticians- or the incorporation of exclusive brands are just some of the initiatives that she has turned into a reality. .
In addition to the personalized treatment and the wide range of tests offered in the optics cabinet, Óptica Fernández Baca has made the leap into the digital world with its own online store: opticafernandezbaca. com
